St. John's, NL – Memorial University Men's Basketball Head Coach Ian Coultas is pleased to announce the addition of Jacob Sheppard, a 6'2" small forward from Gonzaga High School in St. John's.
Sheppard joins the Sea-Hawks after developing his game with Gonzaga and the CE23 program, where he established himself as a tough, competitive wing capable of impacting the game on both ends of the floor. Known for his defensive intensity and ability to attack the basket, Sheppard brings energy and versatility to Memorial's lineup.
He plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science at Memorial while continuing his basketball career at the U SPORTS level.
"I am most looking forward to the high level of competition and team travel," Sheppard said.
When asked why he chose Memorial, Sheppard pointed to the program's environment and direction.
"I chose Memorial for its competent coaching staff, strong academic program, and energetic team culture."
Sea-Hawks fans can expect a relentless competitor on the floor.
"Fans can expect to see drive and intensity on the defensive end, with strong attacks to the rim and confident shooting."
Head Coach Ian Coultas has followed Sheppard's development for years and believes his best basketball is still ahead of him.
"I've been watching Jacob play since he was in junior high, and it's been impressive to see how much his game has grown. His work ethic is second to none, and he's built a reputation as a shutdown defender. Over the last few years his offensive game has really taken a big step forward, and I believe he has the tools to become an excellent player at the U SPORTS level."
Gonzaga High School Head Coach Pat Slaney also spoke highly of Sheppard's impact within the program.
"Jacob has been a crucial part of our program at Gonzaga over the past two seasons. As our team captain this year, he was not only our top scorer but also our best defender. He's a versatile defender with great toughness and the ability to anticipate plays before they develop. Offensively, Jacob is a true three-level scorer with a very high basketball IQ. Above all else, his compete level is what will make him successful at the next level."
His club and Canada Games coach, Carl English, echoed that belief.
"Memorial University is getting a very versatile prospect in Jacob. His work ethic, team-first attitude, and defensive ability—being able to guard multiple positions—will be a tremendous asset to the program. I'm incredibly proud of him for achieving his goal. Keep working. The sky's the limit."
The Sea-Hawks look forward to welcoming Sheppard to campus this fall as the team prepares for the upcoming 2025–26 U SPORTS season.
