Sea-Hawks Add Local Big Man Sam Goodland to 2026–27 Roster

St. John's, NL – Memorial University Men's Basketball Head Coach Ian Coultas is pleased to announce the addition of Sam Goodland, a 6'9" center from Waterford Valley High School in St. John's.

Goodland joins the Sea-Hawks after developing his game with Waterford Valley High School, the Fusion (Avalon) program, CE23, and Team Newfoundland and Labrador. With his size, length, and athleticism, he brings a strong presence in the paint and adds depth to Memorial's frontcourt.

Throughout his development, Goodland has earned recognition for both his performance and character, including the SSNL Most Sportsmanship Award in 2025–26 and being named U16 MVP with Fusion during the 2022–23 season.

He plans to pursue Engineering at Memorial while continuing his basketball career at the U SPORTS level.

"I'm looking forward to playing at a higher level of basketball and improving my game. I'm also looking forward to playing for my home province," Goodland said.

When asked why he chose Memorial, Goodland highlighted both the academic and personal connection.

"It's a great university, and both my parents went there."

Sea-Hawks fans can expect an exciting presence around the rim.

"You can expect to see my above-the-rim game with rebounds, blocks, and dunks."

Head Coach Ian Coultas is excited to add another local frontcourt player to the program.

"Sam gives us great size and athleticism in the paint. He's a player who can impact the game defensively with his rim protection and rebounding, and he continues to develop his offensive game. We're excited to work with him and see how he grows within our program."

The Sea-Hawks look forward to welcoming Goodland to campus as the team prepares for the upcoming 2026–27 U SPORTS season.
