St. John's, NL – The Memorial University Seahawks women's basketball program is pleased to announce the commitment of 5'7 guard Hayley McMillan from Guelph, Ontario. McMillan joins the Seahawks from Hamilton in the JUEL League and brings a dynamic, all-around game to the backcourt.
McMillan knew Memorial was the right fit from the moment she arrived on campus.
"I chose Memorial because I honestly fell in love with Newfoundland. From the second I got there, everyone made me feel really welcome, especially Coach English and the girls," said McMillan. "Meeting the team was a huge part of my decision because they were so nice and treated me like I was already part of the program. The environment, the people, and just the overall vibe of the school made Memorial feel like the right place for me, both on and off the court."
As she prepares for her first U SPORTS season, McMillan is eager to embrace the challenge and opportunity ahead.
"Going into my first season, I'm most excited to compete at the next level. I'm really looking forward to getting close with my teammates, learning from the coaches, and getting better as a player throughout the year," she added. "I'm also really excited to wear Memorial colors and represent the school in games."
Known for her versatility and high motor, McMillan describes herself as an all-around guard who can impact the game in multiple ways.
"I would describe my basketball style as pretty all around. I like to be aggressive on offense and look for chances to score. I'm confident in my ability to create my own shots, but I also like setting up my teammates and making plays. I think my style will fit well with the team, and I'm excited to bring lots of energy and effort to the program."
Head Coach Mark English is thrilled to welcome McMillan to the Seahawks.
"We're extremely excited to have Hayley commit to our program," said English. "She comes from a very well-coached and successful program, and that shows in how she plays the game. Hayley is an efficient scorer who can hurt you in multiple areas—off the dribble, from the perimeter, and in transition. She plays with great pace and competitiveness, and she makes the players around her better. We believe she will be a tremendous fit in our culture and a big addition to our backcourt."
Hayley's commitment continues to build momentum for the Seahawks as they prepare for the future. The Seahawks are currently 4-10 this season and currently sit in 6th place in the AUS. They are back on the road this weekend for two games at Cape Breton, Friday at 6:30pm and Saturday at 1:30pm.
